Baseline assessment learner response

 1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: Question 2 is a solid mid-level response but overall I'd say this assessment is most useful as a lesson in the the level you need to reach for a B+  grade this year.

2) Focusing on the BBC Newsbeat question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.

Put simply, this is the content you missed in the summer and the knowledge isn't there. Too many errors or lack of evidence from CSP's

3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
  • Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
  • Useful to understand how audiences interpret information. The more audiences are exposed to televised info the more they integrate into their perspectives of real world phenomena
  • Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
  • Very useful as it demonsrates how mass audiences are injected information which can be manipulated. Like the War of the worlds radio.
  • Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
  • Not that useful although we understand the theory it is a bit hard to bring the theory into practice with War of the worlds as it can be difficult to understand the preferred or oppositional readings.
4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
  • Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.
  • Paragraph 1 content/ideas:
  • Paragraph 2 content/ideas:
  • Paragraph 3 content/ideas:
  • Paragraph 4 content/ideas:
  • Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence
Paragraph 1

In my opinion i believe that the Gentlewoman has been very successful with attracting their target audience despite the digital world endangering their print industry. They release their magazines biannually which is  good for the firm as they can put harder effort into their magazines, collaborations and new ideas./This gives the audiences a much more entertaining educational magazines that they can enjoy

Paragraph 2:

However, the biannual release can be a problem due to the long intervals between each release, audiences may be bored and can move on from the magazine entirely which is not good for Gentlewoman at all.

Paragraph 3:

On the other hand, The GQ is very successful as well due to the amount of diversification they have done. The variety of  different A list celebrities whether its a musician like " PHARELL WILLIAMS" or an actor like "Robert Pattinson" This can bring in fresh and new audiences that can liven up GQ's brand

Paragraph 4:

They also have explored the digital world and have used this to connect other parts of the world like Asia, Africa and North and South America. This also can bring in new audiences and expand the reach and power that GQ have over the magazine industry.

Conclusion: Overall, although the print industry has been failing through the use of diversification and the expanding on the digital platform these two firms have been kept afloat rather than drowning.

5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in the summer.

Structure of my essay how I structure it is just as important as the answer as it can help the examiner understand what I am trying to say

Handwriting, more better handwriting and concise for the examiner

Timing of the essays don't waste too much time on 9 markers or 6 markers
